What Is The Affordable Care Act

The Affordable Care Act provides individuals and families greater access to affordable health insurance options including medical, dental, vision, and other types of health insurance that may not otherwise be available. Under the ACA:

  • You may be able to purchase health care coverage through a state or federal marketplace that offers a choice of plans.

  • Insurers can’t refuse coverage based on gender or a pre-existing condition.

  • There are no lifetime or annual limits on coverage.

  • Young adults can stay on their familys insurance plan until age 26.

  • Seniors who hit the Medicare Prescription Drug Plan coverage gap or “donut hole” can get a discount on medications.

Seniors And Ohip Coverage: Ontario Drug Benefit Program

Seniors who have a valid Ontario Health Card qualify for the Ontario Drug Benefit . When you reach the age of 65, the Government will send you a letter about three months before your 65th birthday telling you that you will automatically join the Ontario Drug Benefit program on the first day of the month after you turn 65 years old.

  • pneumonia vaccination
  • allergy shots and EPIPen
  • one comprehensive eye exam every 12 months

In some cases, individuals may qualify before they reach the age of 65, for instance if they live in a:

Key Question #: How Much Will It Cost

What Does My Marketplace Health Plan Cover?

Understanding what insurance coverage costs is actually quite complicated. In our overview, we talked about paying a premium to enroll in a plan. This is an up front cost that is transparent to you .

Unfortunately, for most plans, this is not the only cost associated with the care you receive. There is also typically cost when you access care. Such cost is captured as deductibles, coinsurance, and/or copays and represents the share you pay out of your own pocket when you receive care. As a general rule of thumb, the more you pay in premium up front, the less you will pay when you access care. The less you pay in premium, the more you will pay when you access care.

The question for our students is, pay now or pay later?

Either way, you will pay the cost for care you receive. We have taken the approach that it is better to pay a larger share in the upfront premium to minimize, as much as possible, costs that are incurred at the time of service. The reason for our thinking is that we dont want any barrier to care, such as a high copay at the time of service, to discourage students from getting care. We want students to access medical care whenever its needed.

How Can You Get Health Insurance

Many people get a health insurance plan through their work. The employer often helps pay for the plan. Some people buy health insurance on their own, directly from an insurance company, rather than getting a plan through an employer.

The Affordable Care Act provides a marketplace for people to look for and compare health insurance plans.

The United States government provides health insurance for people who qualify, such as seniors, people with certain disabilities and health problems, and some people with low incomes. Medicare and Medicaid are government insurance programs that help pay certain medical expenses for people who are eligible.

There are different kinds of health insurance plans to choose from. To get the best care, it’s important to read your insurance plan closely. Be sure you understand the plan’s rules and costs, how it works, and which medical services are covered.

Q What Should I Do If I Move

It is important that ServiceOntario has your current address to ensure your coverage remains active and for any direct communication with you.

There are three ways to update your address:

Northern Health Travel Grant :

You may be eligible for a Northern Health Travel Grant to help pay transportation costs if you live in northern Ontario and must travel long distances for specialty medical care.

Services in Other Canadian Provinces and Territories :

Most of your Ontario health coverage benefits can be used across Canada. The province or territory you are visiting will usually bill Ontario directly. If you have to pay for health services you receive in another part of Canada, you can submit your receipts to your local OHIP Claims office to be considered for reimbursement. Prescription drugs from pharmacies, home care services, ambulance services and long-term care services provided in other provinces and territories are not covered.

Q What If I Forget To Bring My Health Card When I Go For Health Care

You may be charged for a health service if you do not have a health card. The ministry requests that the provider reimburse you for the service if it was an OHIP insured service and you can later show that you were covered by OHIP at the time of the service.

Your health care provider may ask you to fill out a Health Number Release to indicate your consent to the ministry providing your health number to them.

How Do You Get Health Insurance

Your employer may offer you a health plan as part of your job. They work with the insurance company to design the health plans they offer you. Your employer may also choose to add certain programs and services to your benefits, as well.

If you dont get a plan through your employer you can buy one on your own through a state or federal health exchange. You can also buy one directly through a health insurance company, like Cigna. Youll find a variety of plan options to help meet your specific needs.

Does Health Insurance Cover Emergency Contraception

Yes. But it can get a little complicated, depending on the type you need. Under the ACA, most health insurance plans must cover all methods of birth control that you can get with a prescription, including emergency contraception.

There are three kinds of emergency contraception: the copper IUD, the ella morning-after pill, and the Plan B morning-after pill.

The most effective type of morning-after pill is ella. You need a prescription to get ella which means that most health insurance plans will cover ella at no cost to you.

You dont need a prescription to get Plan B or other brands of levonorgestrel morning-after pills, such as Take Action, My Way, and AfterPill. You can buy them over-the-counter at drugstores, pharmacies, superstores, and online. Health insurance wont pay for these types of morning-after pills if you buy them over-the-counter without a prescription. But if you get a prescription, most health insurance plans will cover them at no cost to you.

Its a good idea to get morning-after pills ahead of time and keep them in your medicine cabinet just in case. That way if you need it, you can take it as soon as possible. So if theres ever a chance you might need emergency contraception, call your nurse or doctor and ask for a prescription, or get a prescription at your next appointment. You wont have to worry about trying to get it at the last minute and the cost will be covered by your health insurance.

Medical Services Not Covered

  • non-medically required surgery such as cosmetic procedures, vasectomy reversal, abdominoplasty
  • learn about drug coverage and services

  • call Health Link at 811 or go to Alberta Health Services Immunization to find out about immunizations and exceptions

  • drivers medical exam for patients 74.5 years of age of older
  • payment for diagnostic imaging referred by chiropractors, physiotherapists and audiologists
  • Deductibles Copays And Coinsurance

Premiums are set fees that must be paid monthly. If your premiums are up to date, you are insured. The fact that you are insured, however, does not necessarily mean that all your healthcare expenses are paid for by your insurance plan.

    • Deductibles. Deductibles, according to Healthcare.gov, are “the amount you pay for covered healthcare services before your insurance plan starts to pay.” But it’s important to understand that some services can be fully or partially covered before you meet the deductible, depending on how the plan is designed.ACA-compliant plans, including employer-sponsored plans and individual/family plans, cover certain preventive services at no cost to the enrollee, even if the deductible has not been met. And it’s quite common to see plans that partially cover certain servicesincluding office visits, urgent care visits, and prescriptionsbefore the deductible is met.Instead of having the enrollee pay the full cost of these visits, the insurance plan may require the member to only pay a copay, with the health plan picking up the remainder of the bill. But other health plans are designed so that all servicesother than the mandated preventive care benefitsare applied towards the deductible and the health plan doesn’t start to pay for any of them until after the deductible is met. The cost of premiums is often closely tied to deductibles: you will generally pay more for an insurance policy that has lower deductibles, and vice versa.

Does Health Insurance Cover Birth Control

Yes. Most health insurance plans must cover the full range of prescription birth control methods for free with no copay, coinsurance, or other out-of-pocket costs, even if you havent met your deductible. This includes birth control pills, implants, IUDs, the vaginal ring, the patch, the shot, internal condoms, diaphragms, cervical caps, tubal ligation , and emergency contraception.

But some plans require cost-sharing for certain brands of birth control, which means you may have to pay some of the cost out of pocket. You can check with your health insurance provider to make sure your birth control is covered for free and if its not, they can tell you how much it will cost. The nurse or doctor who is prescribing your birth control can also help you figure out if your health insurance covers the brand you need.

Health insurance plans are not required to cover methods that you can buy over-the-counter without a prescription . Plans are also not required to cover birth control for people with penises but some may.

Some religious organizations are allowed to refuse to cover birth control in their health insurance plans for employees. Others may use a third-party contractor or separate insurer for birth control coverage. Contact your health insurance provider or employer for more information.

There are limited Medicaid programs that only cover family planning services . Contact your states Medicaid agency to find out if youre eligible.

Why Is Getting An Affordable Health Insurance Coverage Important After Losing Your Job

Our health is a basic and very important part of our lives and for no reason should we compromise it or allow anything to put a halt to our health insurance policy. Health insurance in the United States is expensive.

The U.S. government and the workforce system have made it easy to access a robust range of health-care-related policies. No matter your financial category, there is always a plan that caters to your needs as far as a healthcare insurance policy is concerned. Many health insurance companies offer affordable policies.

From time to time, efforts are made to subsidize the amount an individual is expected to pay out of their pocket to cover for their health insurance. Such a move has served as a soft landing for many who have tapped into it.

It is believed that most U.S citizens under the age of 65 healthcare plans are run or funded by the organization they work. But what would happen if you then lose your job? Itll also mean that youll lose the benefit from the organization you worked for, but this can be quickly taken care of if you know what to do. This is why you need to know how health insurance works in your state and place of work.

How Will My Health Plan Cover A Covid

Does My Health Insurance Cover Coronavirus?

The CARES Act requires all non-grandfathered health plans, including private insurance, Medicare, and Medicaid, to cover COVID-19 vaccines without any cost-sharing for the member .

The full coverage of COVID-19 vaccines includes both the vaccine itself and any charges from the provider or facility for the administration of the vaccine. The COVID-19 vaccine has been added to the list of recommended vaccines, and the CARES Act required private health plans to begin fully covering it within 15 business days much faster than the normal timeframe between when a preventive care recommendation is made and when insurers have to cover it with no cost-sharing. This applies to all COVID vaccines that have received FDA approval, including emergency use authorizations. As of April 2021, that includes vaccines from Pfizer, Moderna, and Johnson & Johnson.
