  • Young adults can stay on their familys insurance plan until age 26.

  • Seniors who hit the Medicare Prescription Drug Plan coverage gap or “donut hole” can get a discount on medications.

How To Get Health Coverage

You can get health care coverage through:

  • A group coverage plan at your job or your spouse or partner’s job
  • Your parents’ insurance plan, if you are under age 26
  • A plan you purchase on your own directly from a health insurance company or through the Health Insurance Marketplace
  • Government programs such as
  • The Veterans Health Administration or TRICARE for military personnel
  • Your state, if it provides a health insurance plan
  • Continuing employer coverage from your former employer, on a temporary basis under the Consolidated Omnibus Budget Reconciliation Act
  • Submit Your Premium For Reimbursement

This last step is optional, but important if your employer offers an HRA. If you have an HRA allowance from your employer, youll likely be able to get a tax-free reimbursement on your premium.

All you need to do is submit documentation to your employer that shows the following:

    • The premium amount
    • The coverage date
    • The insurance provider

After your employer reviews and approves the documentation, youll automatically get reimbursed every month up to your allowance amount. If your premium is more than your monthly allowance, then youll simply pay whats left out of pocket.

    • What are the deductibles? This is the amount you must pay each year before your insurance company will begin paying claims.
    • Are there any co-payments? This is the amount of money you pay each time you receive medical services or a prescription.

A Qualifying Event At Any Time Of The Year Will Likely Allow You To Enroll

Applicants who experience a qualifying event gain access to a special enrollment period to shop for plans in the exchange with premium subsidies available in the exchange for eligible enrollees.

HHS stepped up enforcement of special enrollment period eligibility verification in 2016, and further increased the eligibility verification process in 2017. So if you experience a qualifying event, be prepared to provide proof of it when you enroll.

And in most cases, the current rules limit SEP plan changes to plans at the same metal level the person already has. The state-run exchanges can use their own discretion on this, but in general, if youre enrolling mid-year, be prepared to provide proof of the qualifying event that triggered your special enrollment period, and know that you might not be able to switch to a more robust or less robust plan during your SEP. And understand that in most but not all cases, the current SEP rules allow you to change your coverage but not necessarily go from being uninsured to insured. So you may be asked to provide proof of your prior coverage in addition to proof of the qualifying event.

And without a qualifying event, major medical health insurance is not available outside of general open enrollment, on or off-exchange. This is very different from the pre-2014 individual health insurance market, where people could apply for coverage at any time. But of course, approval used to be contingent on health status, which is no longer the case.

Why Should I Get Extended Health Care Benefits For My Employees

As previously mentioned, government-issues health plans are often limited in their coverage. The parameters indicated by your group benefits may provide your employees access to some services or coverage, but not others. As a result, some employees may choose not to opt into the benefits plans because the coverage provided may be insufficient. Some may even choose to pay out-of-pocket for supplemental coverage.

With this plan, you can help your employees avoid having to pay for additional health insurance by providing them with the coverage they need upfront.

    Communicate Early And Often

An easy way to understand what your employees are looking for from their benefits package is to ask them. First, conduct a survey that covers the basics of your plan options and see which ones are most important to your team. Then organize your plan based on their responses.

After you’ve selected your plan, alert your employees that Open Enrollment is coming. But remember choosing a benefits plan isn’t always easy for people. To connect with them early in the process, use clear, easy-to-follow language and terminology. Summarize your benefits choices and any changes from the previous year so they can examine their options. You might also want to consider bringing in a third-party representative to outline your benefits plan and answer any questions.
