Why Doesn’t Cigna Cover Lasik

It’s clear that a traditional Cigna plan, along with supplemental plans and vision discount plans, offers consumers no relief from the cost of LASIK surgery. That might seem surprising, given that LASIK is a trusted and well-known solution for people who would like to see clearly without the constant use of glasses or contact lenses. If the procedure is clearly medical, shouldn’t it be covered?

According to Cigna, LASIK is considered a cosmetic procedure. That means LASIK is a solution that people can choose to access in order to change the way they look. It is not a solution that people might use in order to solve a health-related problem.

This is a very strict definition, and it is very difficult for consumers to move past. If the company considers LASIK to be totally optional and cosmetic, there are few to no exceptions that might apply here. Anytime a consumer might ask Cigna for help in paying for this kind of surgery, the company could respond with verbiage about how the procedure is not really required. Trying to fight back might not be fruitful.

Glaucoma: Types, Symptoms, and Treatment

Your doctor will use eyedrops to widen your pupils. This makes it easier to see the back of the eye. Your doctor may also use eyedrops to numb the surface of your eyes. It takes about 15 to 20 minutes to fully dilate the pupils.

The dilating eyedrops may make your eyes sting. They may also cause a medicine taste in your mouth.

When your pupils are dilated, your doctor will shine a bright light into your eyes and examine them.

Tell your doctor if you or anyone in your family has glaucoma and if you are allergic to any type of eyedrops.

Cignas OAP plan includes a vision plan benefit. The benefits differ from the optional VSP Vision Plan, however, it is possible that an employee on the OAP plan could have both.

Eye doctor visits for non-routine eye exams will be covered under the medical portion of your plan if the eye doctor is a Cigna medical provider. This would include visits related to a diagnosed eye condition, including chronic conditions, eye injuries, infections, etc.

NOTE: OAP plan members must see a Cigna Vision provider for their routine eye exams.

Before you have your routine eye exam, be sure your eye doctor is part of Cignas vision plan network. Some doctors are part of the Cigna network for medical claims, but are not part of the vision plan network. What Is Medicare Advantage

To understand Advantage plans, it helps to know how they fit within Medicare. Original Medicare comprises Part A, which is hospital insurance, and Part B, which is medical insurance. Part C plans, otherwise known as Medicare Advantage plans, are the alternative to original Medicare and provide all the benefits of parts A and B.

In addition, many Advantage plans offer prescription drug coverage, and some include extra benefits, such as vision and dental care. Most plans also have free programs that help people manage their health conditions and develop healthful lifestyle habits.

Medicare Advantage differs from original Medicare in several ways. Advantage plans usually require an individual to choose from in-network providers, while original Medicare lets someone choose from any Medicare-enrolled providers. Advantage plans also put a yearly limit on out-of-pocket costs and include benefits that original Medicare does not cover.

Aside from Medicare parts A, B, and C, Medicare has two other main parts: Part D, which is prescription drug coverage, and Medigap, which is Medicare supplement insurance. A person with an Advantage plan can have neither Part D nor Medigap, as these are only available to those enrolled in original Medicare.

A person may choose from several Cigna Advantage plans, including:

All the Cigna Advantage plans provide the hospital and medical insurance of Medicare parts A and B. Most also cover prescription drugs.

When Do Cigna Medicare Advantage Plans Pay For Vision Care

Cigna Medicare Advantage plans typically include vision coverage. Depending on the specific plan chosen, these benefits can include coverage of:

  • Eye exams
  • Diabetic retinal and glaucoma exams
  • Lenses, frames and contact lenses

Lens coverage can include single vision, bifocal, trifocal and lenticular lenses. Certain Cigna plans may cover lenses, frames and contact lenses, while other plans may provide an allowance that may be used toward such products. Or your plan may provide coverage when used within the Cigna network and a payment allowance when used out-of-network.

Medicare Advantage plans offer Medicare beneficiaries an alternative way to receive their Part A and Part B benefits, and most Medicare Advantage plans include added benefits that arent covered by Original Medicare, such as routine and advanced vision care.

Many Cigna Medicare Advantage plans may also offer prescription drug coverage, which means various medications that may be prescribed for vision-related care may also be covered by a Cigna Medicare Advantage plan.
