COBRA requires employers to offer you health care and dental coverage for up to 18 months when you leave your job. While this may sound great, COBRA comes with one significant drawback: its expensive.

You have to pay for the entire cost of your COBRA health insurance out-of-pocket plus a 2 percent administrative fee. The Kaiser Family Foundation found that theaverage cost of employer-sponsored health insurance premiums was $6,896 for an individual in 2018.

If you recently left an employer to embark on self employment, COBRA may provide you with relief from sudden change. It can also give you the chance to stick to the same health insurance plan you had before.

Health Insurance Shopping Tips

After you become self-employed and purchase health insurance, it’s crucial to shop for plans every open enrollment period. Your or your family’s medical needs or income may change.

Additionally, new health insurers come in and go out of the health insurance marketplace. Carriers that offered plans in your ZIP code last year may not be the same set of players this year. In other words, a competitor could offer a similar or better plan than yours, for a lower price. So, if you don’t shop annually, you could leave money on the table.

Where To Find Health Insurance

The good news for finding your own health insurance is there are a variety of insurance providers, plans, and places to research and choose a policy.

In my search, I explored a few of the options below and ultimately chose a plan from eHealthInsurance.com.

Here are common ways to find health insurance if youre self-employed.

The Best Health Insurance Options If Youre Self

The federal marketplace has participating insurance providers all over the country. If you had an insurance provider in the past, chances are that they also have plans available on the health insurance marketplace.

You can purchase a plan directly from those providers, and the marketplaces help you do that. But first youll want to choose a plan that works for you.

Think of the federal marketplace as the menu serving up your options. You can see whats available, filter by things that are important to you, and ultimately choose a plan. But first youll need to apply for coverage.

The Healthcare.gov marketplace is about as clunky as youd expect from a government website. Thankfully its improved, and there are several other private companies that have even easier interfaces.

And some more good news: those services are free to use.

There are three places you can start your application and enrollment:

How Much Will Health Insurance Cost When Youre Self

With so many variables like your age, where you live, where you obtain the insurance and what plan you chose, thats a question thats almost impossible to answer. According to a 2019 survey on employer health benefits conducted by the Kaiser Family Foundation, the premium for single people enrolled in their companys health insurance ran $7,188 per year, with the employee paying 18% of thator about $400 a month. And thats a company-sponsored plan thats partially subsidized. As an independent contractor , you can expect to pay at least that much, and probably more. The above-mentioned tax benefits can help offset the cost. And so can SingleCare.

The SingleCare free-to-use prescription savings card can save you up to 80% on prescriptions at over 35,000 pharmacies nationwide, including CVS, Target, Walmart, and more. On average, SingleCare users save an average of $150 a year on their prescriptions. There are no fees or subscriptions with SingleCare and even those with insurance prescription plans can use it and save. Our price sometimes will give you a lower price than your insurance co-pay. Use singlecare.com to search your prescription and find the pharmacy nearest you that has your medication for the lowest price.

Your Options May Not Be Limited To Enrollment Periods

Affordable Care Act health insurance plans can be applied for only during specific times throughout the year. Open Enrollment is the months when ACA plans are available. After Open Enrollment has ended, you must have a Qualifying Life Event , such as marriage, birth of a child, or job transition, to apply for these plans. This doesnt mean your options for coverage are limited.Whether you need health insurance for your family, or just for you, reap the benefits from exploring all of your options. We want to make it easy to shop and apply for different types of medical coverage year-round so you can spend less time worrying, and more time focused on what matters most to you and your business.

How To Get Health Insurance When Youre Self

Getting health insurance when youre self-employed isnt always easy. Unlike traditional employees, self-employed workers dont have an employer to help cover their monthly premiums or negotiate for lower deductibles on their behalf. The most common solution is for self-employed individuals to get coverage through their spouse. But for those who cant get on a family members plan, it can be difficult or costly to attain coverage.

Some self-employed people choose to insure themselves through their small business. But without the cost-sharing benefits of employees, theres less incentive to do so. Perhaps thats why 34% of self-employed people have access to health insurance, compared to roughly 84% of traditional employees. Thats according to Gallups 2019 Gig Economy and Self-Employment Report.

If you need an individual health insurance plan, here are some options to consider and reasons for getting insured.

If You Dont Have Coverage

How Does Self-Employed Health Insurance Work? : Insurance Advice

Self-employed, freelancers and entrepreneurs who decide to do without coverage will be subject to a tax penalty starting in 2014. Starting next year, the fee will be 1% of your income or $95, whichever is higher. By 2016, the fee is set to increase to 2.5% of income or $695. On top of paying the fee, youll also have to pay all of your medical costs out-of-pocket if a health crisis hits. If youre self-employed, it pays to evaluate all of your insurance options sooner rather than later, not only for your health but for your financial peace of mind.

How Do I Get Health Insurance If I Am Self Employed

If you are the only employee of your business, you probably dont qualify for group health coverage. Plans on the Affordable Care Act marketplace are available to purchase for you and your family during the annual Open Enrollment Period each fall.

In 2021, eligibility for tax premium subsidy that reduce premiums were expanded.2 That means that if you previously did not qualify for a tax credit that lowers your monthly costs before, you may be eligible now. Take the HealthMarkets health insurance questionnaire on our shopping page to see if you may qualify.

A Word Of Caution On Income Estimates

If you dont understand how the tax credits work, you may be tempted to fake your income in order to be eligible for a higher tax credit.

Your tax credits are based on the Adjusted Gross Income that you report in your tax return for the following year. So if you apply for marketplace coverage in November 2019, and your coverage runs through the 2020 calendar year, your 2020 premium tax credit is dependent on the AGI reported on your 2020 tax returns.

If your 2020 tax return lists an AGI that is higher than your projected AGI from November 2019, you must pay back the tax credit you were given. Theres no cheating the system here while you may lower your premiums month to month as you go through 2020, you will eventually pay the premiums you truly owe based on your 2020 financial performance.

So if you dont underestimate your income, and dont withhold some cash to pay back your healthcare premiums, you may run into a cash flow problem.

On the flip side, if you overestimate your income and submit a lower AGI on your 2020 tax return, you may be reimbursed for tax credits you are owed.

One last thing on the income projections: if you are self employed, you will likely be asked to provide proof of the income you are projecting. This may be difficult depending on how long youve been in business its easy to refer back to the previous years tax return, but if you were employed, that wont help much.

The public exchange for employers, known as the Small Business Health Options Marketplace, categorizes business owners with no employees as self-employed and those with employees as small employers. To buy group health coverage through the SHOP, you must have at least one eligible full-time equivalent employee. An eligible employee cannot be a spouse, business partner, or part owner in your company. You usually need to have no more than 50 employees to buy a SHOP plan. If you want to enroll yourself in the plan, at least one of your employees must first be enrolled.14

Your small business may qualify for a tax credit of up to 50% if you have fewer than 25 employees, but this comes with certain requirements:15

  • You have to buy a SHOP plan for at least two years.
  • Your employees cant earn more than $50,000 in average annual wages.
  • You offer a qualified health plan through SHOP.
  • You must pay for at least 50 percent of employees premium costs.

Dont Delay Your Health Insurance Purchase

There are many people who delay or completely neglect the health insurance policy because they dont find a product that comes with all the dream features. They want high cover, best claim settlement ratio and a wide network of hospital without shelling out much money.

But sadly, this dream shatters when it sees the light of real insurance world. It is necessary to understand that pricing and features of health insurance policies depend on various factors, and you cant get all features which you want in one policy.

It may happen that nine things out of 10 are present in one mediclaim policy, and one is missing, so what will you do? Try to find out a policy that has all the ten features? There are many people who delay their purchase of health insurance policies because they dont find the product of their choice.

It is a big mistake which they are making, as they could be denied a cover later in life in case they develop some pre-existing ailments. As you are self-employed, you might be thinking some ways to save your money, and therefore, decide not to buy a policy unless you find the right one. However, you need to focus on those main features which matter and not run after minor coverage.

What Is Health Insurance For Self

Health insurance for the self-employed is any insurance plan purchased as an independent contractor or self-employed individual where you are required to cover the cost of your own employee benefits, including health insurance. You may have a couple of options for buying coverage, such as purchasing health insurance directly from a provider or through your states exchange or Heathcare.gov. You may apply during open enrollment which happens once per year every fall or after a qualifying life event.

Depending on your income, you may qualify for a discount through cost-sharing reductions, which may lower the cost of your deductible, co-payments, or co-insurance. To qualify, you must sign up for one of the Marketplace plans.

If your income is low, you may also see if you qualify for Medicaid, which could offer free or inexpensive health insurance. You may apply for Medicaid through the Marketplace or through your states Medicaid agency.

The Risks Of Not Getting Health Insurance Coverage

Health Insurance for Self Employed: Beyond Marketplace Insurance!

Simply put, the risk is the unknown. And while no one likes paying high monthly premiums for health insurance, you would probably sleep better knowing that if you had to go to the emergency room, you won’t have to worry about how you’ll pay for the cost of that visit.

Even though lifestyle habits like eating nutritious foods, exercising regularly, managing your stress and getting enough sleep can all help you ward off certain medical conditions, your health isn’t always within your control. “You could spend $2,500 this year on premiums,” said Nechrebecki, “but if you don’t and you get into a car accident, you’re looking at six figures of health care costs.”

“Every ACA-compliant plan has an out-of-pocket max: the most someone is required to pay in one calendar year for eligible services,” Aikman said. On the catastrophic plan , that max is $7,350 for an individual in 2018. With other plans, that max is even lower. The question you need to ask yourself, says Aikman, is: “What’s your peace of mind worth?”

Most countries have a single payer healthcare system covered by taxpayers. Taxes cover the costs of essential healthcare for all residents and are paid out by the government.
