Walmart Ventures Into Mainstream Health Insurance: Medicare
Walmarts evasive attempts to inch into the health insurance market created a buzz once the retailer confirmed on its plans to broker and sell Medicare Advantage plans.
In October 2020, Walmart announced its insurance brokerage, Walmart Insurance Services, will begin to sell Medicare Advantage, Medicare Supplemental and Part D plans in 2021. Walmart plans to market its Medicare health plans, called LiveHealthy, with Clover Health, in eight Georgia counties. The two plans offered by Walmart have no copay for Part D deductible, include $100 every quarter to spend on over-the-counter items at Walmart, and offer savings on dental benefits and hearing aids. Although the plan has broad network, members will not have to pay extra to go out-of-network.
Entering Medicare is a safe bet for Walmart with baby boomers turning 65 by 2030 and enrollment peaking by then. As most established insurers gear up for the enrollment peak, Walmart is stepping into a lucrative segment. Medicare also remains a sector with the few enrollment shifts during the COVID-19 pandemic. Walmart has chosen Georgia to pilot its Medicare plans, because it has six Walmart Health centers and plans to expand retail care. Additionally, Walmart has connected with a long list of providers to create a broad network for its PPO plan.
Surprise Walmart Health Plan Is Cheaper Offers More Coverage Than Obamacare
New Obamacare health insurance enrollees may feel a pang of envy when they eye the coverage plans offered by Walmart to its employees.
For many years, the giant discount retailer has been the target of unions and liberal activists who have harshly criticized the company’s health care plans, calling them notorious for failing to provide health benefits and “substandard.
But a Washington Examiner comparison of the two health insurance programs found that Walmart’s plan is more affordable and provides significantly better access to high-quality medical care than Obamacare.
Independent insurance agents affiliated with the National Association of Health Underwriters and health policy experts compared the two at the request of the Examiner.
Walmart furnished employee benefit information to the Examiner. Neither Obamacare advocate Families USA nor the United Food and Commercial Workers , which backs anti-Walmart campaigns, responded to Examiner requests for comment.
Walmart offers its employees two standard plans, a Health Reimbursement Account and an alternative it calls “HRA High” that costs more out of employees’ pockets but has lower deductibles. Blue Cross Blue Shield manages both plans nationally.
Also offered is a Health Savings Account plan that includes high deductibles but allows tax-free dollars to be used for coverage.
The medical journal reported a 30-year-old smoker would pay up to $428 per month, in contrast to roughly $70 each month for a Walmart employee.

Inside Walmart’s Newest Venture
Walmart Insurance Services is a licensed insurance brokerage, established in July, that will collaborate with several national and regional insurance carriers to offer Medicare Advantage, Medicare part D drug coverage, and Medicare supplement plans for the 2021 coverage period. While Walmart said additional insurers may join in the future, insurers that are currently participating include Amerigroup, Anthem Blue Cross Blue Shield, Arkansas Blue Cross Blue Shield, Centene, Clover Health, Humana, Simply Health, and UnitedHealthcare.
Walmart Insurance Services, which is licensed in all 50 states and Washington, D.C., will start selling these plans on Oct. 15, the start of Medicare’s annual enrollment period for 2021, through Dec. 7. According to Lori Flees, SVP and COO of Walmart U.S. Health & Wellness, Walmart Insurance Services has “built a team of licensed insurance agents” to help consumers find and enroll in their preferred plan.
For MA plans in particular, Walmart Insurance Services will offer multiple options, Forbes reports, including plans with extra services and benefits for members, such as disease management and nurse assistance hotlines, as well as programs for vision, dental care, and wellness management .

The move announced Tuesday by Walmart comes at a time of intense competition in the health insurance industry for the booming population of seniors eligible for Medicare benefits. Already, myriad big health insurers are expanding into hundreds of new counties to sell both private Medicare Advantage health coverage and Medicare part D drug benefits.
In Walmarts case, the retailer is launching Walmart Insurance Services, which is a licensed insurance brokerage the retailer says will assist people with enrolling in insurance plansand simplify whats historically been a cumbersome, confusing process. Walmart Insurance Services will be working with several existing national and regional health insurance carriers including Humana, UnitedHealth Groups UnitedHealthcare health insurance unit and Centenes Wellcare Health Plans.
Walmart Insurance Services will begin selling these Medicare medical and drug benefit plans during this years annual enrollment period, which runs Oct. 15 through Dec. 7.
