Extending Eligibility For Premium Tax Credits Is The Best Option For Helping Middle
Even when premiums are similar, individual market plans are generally less affordable for middle-income consumers than employer plans. Employees typically pay only a portion of premiums out of pocket, with their employers paying the rest. In addition, middle-income families with employer coverage receive a tax subsidy averaging over $5,000, covering close to 40 percent of premiums.
In contrast, the roughly 6 million individual market consumers with incomes too high to qualify for premium tax credits pay the full sticker price of their plans out of pocket. The result is that some middle-income individual market consumers especially those with incomes only modestly above 400 percent of the poverty line, those who are older, and those who live in high-cost areas face premiums that exceed 15 or even 20 percent of their income.
A straightforward solution to making coverage more affordable for middle-income consumers would be to make them eligible for the ACAs premium tax credits. For people with incomes below 400 percent of the poverty line, premium tax credits are calculated as the difference between sticker price premiums for the benchmark plan and a set share of income for example, 9.86 percent of income for people with incomes between 300 and 400 percent of the poverty line. Premium tax credits cover the remaining cost of the plan.
Is Group Health Insurance Cheaper Than Individual Health Insurance
Group health insurance plans usually offered by the employer are usually cheaper than an individual health insurance plan. Though each of these plans come with their own benefits and exclusions, group mediclaim insurance plans are more cost-effective than health insurance plans for an individual, for various reasons.
The following are the reasons why group health insurance plans are priced cheaper than individual health plans
- Risk pooling:Group health insurance policies are offered on the basis of risk pooling across a large number of employees to be insured. As the group of employees can have both a high and low-risk profile for the insurance company, the pricing is done on the basis of general factors such as the size of the group or company, the average age of the employees, nature of jobs and the industry in which the company operates etc. Hence, the risk is spread across all the members of the group which brings down the overall cost of insurance when calculated on an individual basis. Medical insurance for employees in India is provided by most of the companies who have employees in large numbers.
- Tax benefits to employers: Premiums paid on healthcare coverage availed for employees can get tax incentives for the employer. Specifically, health insurance bought for employees by small businesses can benefit the business owners with reduced cost due to tax deduction benefits.
Important Differences Between Group And Individual Health Coverage
Once you read through this list of some of the key differences between group and individual health insurance coverage then you will likely be light years ahead of the average health insurance shopper.
As the owner of an independent health insurance agency in Florida I cant tell you how many times our agents have seen the light bulb go on while explaining/teaching clients some of these important distinctions:
How Does The Size Of My Family Impact My Insurance Cost
Who is this for?
If you purchase your own health coverage, this explains how the number of people covered by your insurance affects your monthly payment and other costs.
The size of your family doesn’t necessarily determine what you spend on doctors and prescriptions. A healthy family of six could spend less than a married couple with chronic conditions. But when it comes to your health insurance costs, the number of people on a plan does affect what you pay. We’ll show you how.
Why Are Small Business Health Insurance Plans Cheaper
There can be several reasons for a product to be cheaper apart from the basic demand-supply law. So far, we have established that small business health insurance plans are cheaper, let us examine some of the reasons for that:
Lower Cost Per-Person
Since business or group insurance plans come as lump sum insurance for all the employees under a single plan, the per-person cost for the company gets reduced. Think of it as a wholesale shopping experience when you buy in bulk, you save more money as compared to retail shopping. Small business healthcare insurances are kind of the same buying one plan that covers everyone ends up being a rather cost-saving deal on a per-person basis.
More Stability Over Time
Among all different kinds of health and other general insurance plans available in the UAE, group insurance plans are generally the least affected by market forces. This means that when other kinds of offline and online health insurance plans see a huge hike in the premiums, group insurance plans may not get any hike at all or get an almost negligible hike.
More Cost-Effective Top-Tier Plans
Essential Benefits Coverage
Lesser Effectors of Premium-Influencing Factors
Factors that influence premium rates in individual plans have a lot less effect on the group health insurance plans than it does on the individual health insurance plans. These factors can include
Constant Increase in the Rate of Individual Plans
What Makes Affordable Care Act Insurance Different From Employer
Health plans offered through the Affordable Care Act have a few key differences from the health plans an employer might offer. One of the biggest differences is that individual and family health insurance plans offered through the ACA receive subsidized premiums, reducing the monthly cost of coverage. Another difference is that you can only sign up for ACA health insurance during the open enrollment period or due to a qualifying life event, such as:
- Loss of health coverage: Includes turning 26 and losing coverage from a parents plan.
- Changes in household: Such as marriage, divorce, having a baby, or a death in the family.
- Moving: Includes moving to a different ZIP code, as well as students going away for school.
There are other life events that may qualify you for coverage under the ACA, such as changes in income or becoming a U.S. citizen. Once you start your quote, well let you know if you meet the requirements for special enrollment and provide a number of health insurance plans for you to choose from.

What Are The Benefits Of Family Floater Medical Insurance Plans
Lets face it, we arent getting any healthier. Todays stressful and fast-paced life is taking a toll on our body as we see more Indians getting hospitalized, reduced immunity and contracting lifestyle diseases like diabetes and hypertension .
In a previous article on Why Buy Health Insurance?, I reflected on the rising medical costs in India over the last decade. A study by ICICI Lombard showed that medical costs have grown by over 10% every year in the last ten years. This means if a procedure, in 2004, was costing 10,000 then the same procedure will cost 26,000 in 2014.
Extrapolating that to more years would mean the same procedure that costed 10,000 in 2004 will cost:
- 46,000 in 2020
- 120,000 in 2030
- 2,00,000 in 2035
Infact, the study makes a case for a medical inflation as high as 14-15% per year with the growing demand for high-quality & speciality healthcare services in Indian Tier-2 and Tier-3 cities. Plus higher living age of Indians, modern medical advancements, speciality drugs, new diseases all support the case of rising healthcare costs
Families in India are often a case of 1 earning member and 3-4 dependents. This is where the requirement of health insurance is the highest because a hospitalization can burn a serious hole in the household finances. And if the sickness is to the breadwinner in the family, then this aggravates the already precarious situation.

Cost Of Employer Health Insurance Vs Personal Health Insurance
You now have a good understanding of the differences betweenemployer-sponsored health insurance and individual coverage. However, youlikely still one big question: Which costs less?
Its hard to give a firm answer because there are many factors that can influence how much youll pay. Your income, family size and where you live are just three considerations. However, to give you an idea, here are some annual premium averages:
Employer-sponsored health insurance: Average annual premium cost for one person1
Individual health insurance: Average annual premium cost for one person with Marketplace health plan2
|Average annual premium for all consumers||Average annual premiumamong consumers receiving premium tax credit|
While these averages can give you an idea of costs, keep in mind that what you pay for health insurance depends entirely on your unique circumstances.

Difference Between Family Floater Policy And Individual Health Plan
Well, it basically depends on your specific requirements. Opting for the best family health insurance plans in India may be a good solution for some households while individual plans may be seen as a better alternative to family medical insurance plans. In case of individual health insurance plans< , you will have to separately purchase policies for all family members which can be costlier than family floater plans where a single premium amount is collected for extensive coverage for all family members. There is a single sum assured which is shared between all family members.

Some feel that individual plans are better since premiums are worked out in case of family floater plans based on the senior most family member. Renewals are also offered up to a particular age. In case a senior citizen crosses the maximum renewal, the other family members cannot take the policy forward. In case children in these family plans shift to individual plans once they attain the age of 18, they can lose out on waiting period credits and other benefits. In case one member claims, the NCB will be nullified for the entire year. However, family health plans are mostly cheaper and there is the benefit of a single premium and renewal as opposed to multiple policies and premiums for family members.
