What Is The Affordable Care Act

Health Insurance Basics: How Do I Choose the Right Plan?

The Affordable Care Act provides individuals and families greater access to affordable health insurance options including medical, dental, vision, and other types of health insurance that may not otherwise be available. Under the ACA:

  • You may be able to purchase health care coverage through a state or federal marketplace that offers a choice of plans.

  • Insurers can’t refuse coverage based on gender or a pre-existing condition.

  • There are no lifetime or annual limits on coverage.

  • Young adults can stay on their familys insurance plan until age 26.

  • Seniors who hit the Medicare Prescription Drug Plan coverage gap or “donut hole” can get a discount on medications.

How To Pick The Right Health Insurance Plan

Health insurance is necessary for every individual who wants their family members as well as themselves financially stable while facing a health problem. Some of the best health insurance plans can cover maximum hospital bills without any questions, but they can be expensive. At the same time, there are several health insurances available in the market that may be available at affordable prices but may not cover all medical bills. Based on what you can afford and what health risks you want to cover, here is how you can find the right health insurance plan for yourself and your family.

Learn what you want

Research as much as you can to find the right health insurance for yourself. Choose from a wide range of plans to cover factors such as hospitalization cover, ambulance charges, maternity benefits, daily treatment benefits, cashless treatment, etc. Buying health insurance for kids will differ from buying insurance for the elderly. Find the right insurance based on everyones needs so everyone can get a cover when needed.

Look for flexible plans

If you are purchasing plans for family health insurance, try to find a flexible plan that can allow adding new members to the insurance. Most family health insurance plans will allow you to add new family members easily. In case a family member passes away, you should still be able to get the option to add a new member to the plan.

Tips For Choosing Your Health Insurance Plan Through Work

Are you trying to choose a health insurance plan offered through your employer? Choosing a health plan for the year ahead is an important decision. And if it’s open enrollment time at your company, it’s your time to explore the available health plan options before you enroll.

You can use this checklist and watch our open enrollment video series to help you weigh the options and decide which health plan may be best for you. Let’s get started.

Why I Chose A More Expensive Plan

How To Select The Right Health Insurance Plan?

Its tough to tell which doctors are being left out of the smaller network you can look up individual clinicians or facilities, but its impossible to get a more holistic view of whos in and whos out.

Ive heard enough horrorstories about people getting five- and six-figure bills for care their insurance didnt cover, and the data backed up my concern that its a really big problem. While nothing short of a change in federal law can stop that from happening entirely, I figured that picking a plan with some out-of-network coverage could help .

Dahlia Remler, a health economist at the City University of New Yorks Baruch College, has also why out-of-network coverage can be important if youre sick, based on her own experience trying to find a neurosurgeon to treat a rare kind of tumor.

For what its worth, both Anderson and Tom Loach, the director of carrier relations at the insurance-shopping site eHealth, told me Id probably be fine with the more limited coverage.

“You really cant make a bad decision because youre not going to use it anyway,” Loach said.

Still, I figured Id opt for better protection. So Im spending about $1000 a year for the “Low PPO” plan.

Hopefully, when next year comes around, I still wont be going to the doctor much, and that thousand dollars will have been money wasted.

But I know theres a small chance itll have been well worthwhile. Who knew that healthcare could be so complicated?

Choose A Plan With Lifetime Renewability

Lifetime renewability is also an essential factor to consider. A lot of us tend to forget it. Make sure that you check the number of years that your policy remains validated check whether it offers limited lifetime renewability or not.

Why? Because you will require a health plan the most during the later years of age. So, choose a family health plan that offers lifetime renewability. This will enable you to continue with the same plan in the years to come without the hassle of buying another policy after crossing the age limit. For example, your health insurance plan offers renewability till 45 years. Once you pass the age, then you would need to buy another one that will cost you much more. And if you buy a plan with lifetime renewability, you can continue it further in a hassle-free manner.

Dropped By Your Existing Insurer

Although the ACA prevents insurers from canceling your coverageor denying you coverage due to a preexisting condition or because you made a mistake on your applicationthere are other circumstances when your coverage may be canceled. Its also possible that your insurance may become so expensive that you cant afford it.

Consider Your Health Needs

Before you start comparing healthcare plans, think about what your and your familys health needs will be over the next year.

Dr. Nancy Nielsen, MD, PhD, senior associate dean for health policy at the University at Buffalos Jacobs School of Medicine and Biomedical Sciences said you cant predict if something bad is going to happen, like getting hurt on a ski slope or being diagnosed with cancer.

But in general, you can pretty much gauge it based on what your familys needs have been in the past, she added.

For example, if you have little children, they will need to go to the pediatrician fairly often. Or if youre pregnant, youll need prenatal care. These are both fairly inexpensive situations.

If, on the other hand, somebody in your family has a serious illness, said Nielsen, then the chances are that your costs for medical care total costs are going to be pretty high.

To estimate what healthcare youll need, ask yourself the following questions. If you have a spouse or children, ask the same questions about their health situation.

  • Do you have a chronic health condition like diabetes, high blood pressure, or cancer?
  • Do you see your primary care doctor or specialists multiple times a year?
  • Do you need regular lab work, MRIs, CT scans, or other tests?
  • How often do you use urgent care centers or emergency rooms, either for routine or urgent care?
  • Are you taking one or more medications, especially brand name ones which are often more expensive?

Tip #: Sign Up And Save

Health insurance offers medical and financial protection in case of a serious illness or accident. In addition to protecting your health, health insurance can help guard against financial hardship, debt and even bankruptcy.

If you dont have health insurance through your employer, your spouse, your parents or another source, you can sign up for private health insurance. In the past, people with preexisting medical conditions were often denied health insurance or charged extremely high premiums. Today, you can purchase private health insurance through the Health Insurance Marketplace regardless of your past or current health.

Signing up for health insurance is the most effective way to plan for a healthy future for yourself, your family and your finances.

Private Health Insurance Companies

You can visit the websites of major health insurance companies in your geographic region and browse available options based on the type of coverage that you prefer and the deductible that you can afford to pay.

The types of plans available and the premiums will vary based on the region where you live and your age. Its important to note that the plan price quoted on the website is the lowest available price for that plan and assumes that you are in excellent health. You wont know what youll really pay per month until you apply and provide the insurance company with your medical history.

Pricing and the type of coverage can vary significantly based on the health insurance company. Because of this, it can be difficult to truly compare the plans to determine which company has the best combination of rates and coverage. It can be a good idea to identify which plans offer the most of the features that you require and are within your price range, then to read consumer reviews of those plans.

If you are choosing a family plan or are an employer who is choosing a plan that youll provide to your employees, then youll also want to consider the needs of others who will be covered under the plan.

What Does A Deductible Do Anyhow

Your health-insurance company should also do a similar analysis for you, though it’s typically buried in the middle of a document that you get from HR or from the insurance company, called the Summary of Benefits and Coverage.

Above, you can see that the high-deductible plan has a big financial head start on the other options, because Insider offers it to employees for free theres no annual premium. And the company will give you a few hundred dollars to spend toward your medical care, too. The next-cheapest plan costs nearly a thousand dollars a year.

I should note that our high-deductible plan is actually pretty generous. It limits the total amount that you could end up spending on healthcare in a given year to about $3,000.

Above that, all your care is free. The main caveat is that the limit only applies to care that you get from doctors who are in-network with the insurance.

All in all, its a really good choice for a lot of people. Margaret Bowani, who oversees the health insurance here, told me that she picked it for her own family and that its also popular with a lot of the companys younger employees.

Ashish Jha, a physician and health-policy researcher at Harvard, has written about his own experience using a high deductible plan for his family. Id definitely recommend reading his article before going with a high-deductible plan.

How Buying Private Health Insurance Works

Some Americans get insurance by enrolling in a group health insurance plan through their employers.

Medicare provides healthcare coverage to seniors and the disabled, and Medicaid has coverage for low-income Americans.

Medicare is a federal health insurance program for people who are age 65 or older. Certain young people with disabilities and people with end-stage renal disease may also qualify for Medicare. Medicaid is a public assistance healthcare program for low-income Americans regardless of their age.

If your company does not offer an employer-sponsored plan, and if you are not eligible for Medicare or Medicaid, individuals and families have the option of purchasing insurance policies directly from private insurance companies or through the Health Insurance Marketplace.

Anya Samek, an economist, has found that consumers make better choices among health plans when presented with a few simple calculations. So when she switched jobs last year and had to choose a plan herself, she tried entering the various plan features into a spreadsheet to replicate her tool. She gave up, determining the task too complicated.

I picked a plan because in my research I tend to show that high-deductible plans do better for people, said Ms. Samek, an associate professor at the University of California, San Diego. But its just a guess.

When Paul Krugman, the Nobel-winning economist and a New York Times columnist, started a teaching job at the City University of New York, he had a choice between one union health plan at The Times and an array of university options, which I found incomprehensible, he said in an email.

I asked H.R. at CUNY if they could explain the differences they said no. So I went with The Times, precisely because it didnt require that I make a choice!

People want advice, they want guidance, Mr. Lang said. And its pretty hard.

Whenever anybody asks me about this, I say my dad is the only Medicare beneficiary who could figure this out, because he could call me, she said.

The average premium for the benchmark healthcare plan on the Affordable Care Act health exchange is expected to drop by 4 percent next year, reports CNN.

Other out-of-pocket expenses are also on the rise, including deductibles for employer coverage. This is the amount you have to pay before your insurance begins covering most services.

The news that premiums are down for plans on the ACA healthcare exchange is good news for anyone who doesnt qualify for employer coverage, Medicaid , or Medicare .

If you want to lock in these savings, youll have to act soon.

The open enrollment period for the federal HealthCare.gov and state insurance marketplaces runs from .

This is a fact that apparently 88 percent of Americans may not know. But its crucial to keep that timeline in mind if youre interested in getting your plan from the open marketplace.

If you miss the deadline, youll have to wait until next year to apply, unless you qualify for a special enrollment period. This applies to major life events like having a baby, getting married, or losing your health coverage.

Navigating the sign up process and comparing healthcare plans can be complicated, so its best not to wait until the last minute to start.

Consider Your Health Care Needs

From year to year, your coverage needs may change. Maybe you have different medication needs or a procedure planned for the upcoming year. Before you enroll in a plan, think about the care you or your family may need in the year ahead. Here are some factors to consider as you’re making your decision.

What Do You See The Doctor For

If mostly for minor care needs:

You may need less coverage if you see the doctor occasionally for your annual checkup, minor illness or injury. To save money, you might choose the less expensive plan where you pay less in premiums in exchange for less coverage.

If mostly for major or frequent care needs:

You may need more coverage if youre planning for a major procedure, seeing the doctor often or take specialty medications. To save money overall, this typically means paying more in premiums in exchange for more coverage from your plan. These plans usually have a lower deductible and out-of-pocket limit so that your plan can help you faster.
