Coverage For Quarantine Hotels In The Eu

EHIC || Get the European Health Insurance || European health insurance card 101 guide

Some EU countries require foreign visitors, including UK residents, to stay in quarantine hotels if they either:

  • test positive for coronavirus and have no or mild symptoms
  • are close contacts of someone who has tested positive for COVID-19

The costs of quarantine hotels are not covered by an EHIC or GHIC, as the UK considers these hotels to be a public health measure, not medically necessary state-provided healthcare.

If you need medical treatment while staying at a quarantine hotel, the UK Government will fund treatment as usual for UK residents or insured individuals. Use your EHIC or GHIC card, or contact the NHS Business Services Authority to receive a Provisional Replacement Certificate if you do not have a valid card.

EHIC has only ever covered emergency and necessary healthcare costs, so it is always recommended that you take out comprehensive travel insurance, including health cover, when you travel abroad.

What Does The Ehic Cover

The EHIC covers all medically necessary treatment by public healthcare providers. This includes:

  • Doctors visits. You should consult with a doctor that has a contract with the national health insurance fund in the country you are visiting. If you are not familiar with the health scheme, ask your hotel, travel guide, or locals for help in finding a doctor.
  • You will usually need a referral from a doctor to be hospitalized unless it is an emergency. Some hospitals may charge a small fee for your stay in the first few days, others will not charge anything at all.
  • Prescription medication. Most national health insurance funds will cover prescription medication, either fully or to a degree. Flu and cold medicine or over-the-counter painkillers are usually not covered.
  • Dental care. In most cases, you are covered for basic and emergency dental treatment. More complex or expensive procedures, such as dentures or crowns are not always covered by national healthcare, and therefore not by an EHIC either.
  • In most cases, ambulances are covered by the national healthcare fund, so if you need an ambulance while abroad, your EHIC should cover you.

Remember: These services are not necessarily free and may be subject to some fees, depending on the country. Sometimes, you have to pay at the time of treatment, then ask for reimbursement later on.

What Is A European Health Insurance Card

The European Health Insurance Card is a card that gives you access to state-provided healthcare during your visit in one of the 28 EU countries . This means that you will be entitled to medical assistance under the same conditions as the residents of that country. However, EHIC cannot be used if you are moving to Germany for a longer period, but only if youre planning to spend up to 6 months there.

In some countries, people insured in healthcare are not required to pay anything with regards to the medical bills while in other countries residents are required to pay a small fee. Whatever the case is, if you have the European Health Insurance Card , you will be entitled to the same benefits and services as the rest of the people insured in that country. This is also the case for people traveling to Germany to spend their holidays.

Keep in mind, however, that the European Health Insurance Card is not the same as travel insurance. You can only use EHIC when it comes to medical matters in Germany and it will not cover costs like flight tickets or lost property. This card does not cover private medical care, so make sure youre getting treatment in the state-system.

In addition, your EHIC will not cover medical expenses if you travel for the purpose of medical treatment, it is simply a way to receive necessary medical treatment while on your visit to another country.
