  • Of the 53 million Americans relying on Medicaid or other public assistance programs, 32% are adults who work full or part time.

Working families are affected:

  • In 2005, the average annual premium for family coverage was $10,880. Health premiums in 2005 increased 9.2% on average over the year before. Since 2000, premiums have risen 73%.
  • Retail prescription drug prices increased an average of 8.3% per year from 1994 to 2004 , more than triple the average annual inflation rate.

Health Care For Wal Mart Associates

More than one half of Walmarts employees receive health care insurance for themselves and or their families through Walmart, amounting to over one million people. Almost 95% of their entire staff has coverage through some provider, either through Walmart or another source. According to the US Census, almost 17% of the employed United States population is unemployed, so Walmarts 5% rate is well below the national average.

Depending on the state, individual coverage is available for as little as eleven dollars a month and children can be covered for both full time and part time associates for only fifty cents per day. The eligibility waiting time is cut in half for part time associates. All health insurance plans come with a confidential nurse line that is available through the Mayo Clinic 24/7 at no additional charge. The hotline can be used to address questions and concerns for illnesses and injuries as well as for wellness coaching. Members who enroll in the Value plan or the Freedom plan are given preventative care services that can be used prior to the deductible having to be met. These care services include screenings such as colonoscopies and mammograms as well as flu shots and well-child visits.

The Retailing Giant Will Launch Its New Brokerage Service By Offering Medicare Plans

Customers can find a vast range of goods at Walmart. Starting next week, they will be able to put a health insurance policy in their shopping cart, too.

The big retailer announced Tuesday that it is launching Walmart Insurance Services, a licensed brokerage, on Thursday, Oct. 15. The unit, which is licensed in all 50 states plus the District of Columbia, will begin by selling Medicare insurance plans. The start date is no accident, as that is the beginning of Medicare’s Annual Enrollment Period .

In that initial stage, Walmart Insurance Services will sell Medicare plans from a variety of well-known providers, including but not limited to Humana, Anthem, and UnitedHealth Group‘s UnitedHealthcare. The company says more might be added in the future.

The initial concentration on Medicare plans is in character for Walmart, which for years has been resolutely focused on budget-conscious customers. Accordingly, the company played up the potential money-saving aspects of its new service, citing recent research from eHealth indicating that one in 10 Medicare beneficiaries has a plan that is the most cost-effective in terms of out-of-pocket spending.

“Helping customers select the right Medicare insurance plan to meet their needs aligns with Walmart’s mission of helping people save money and live better,” the company wrote in the press release announcing the new service.

Are Ratings And Consumer Reviews Positive

Due to Walmarts position as an enormous global retailer, its very difficult to separate reviews for the company in general from any reviews that might exist regarding their insurance services.

Of the reviews that mention health insurance, most are referring to the plans offered by the company to Walmart workers.

Our research indicates that Walmarts insurance agents are generally only available during open enrollment periods, which means customers will not have regular access to the agent. Reviews of the coverage are more likely to be directed to the actual insurance company than towards Walmart.

Centers Of Excellence Program

In 2013, Walmart launched its Centers of Excellence program, covering the full cost of travel and treatment for employees managing complex medical conditions, such as cancer, organ transplants, and many common surgeries. But, to receive free care, the employees must agree to seek treatment at certain predetermined hospitals.

Walmart negotiates bundled payments with those hospitals and reimburses them directly for the care they provide. A bundled payment is a single payment that covers all of the services related to a single illness, injury, or condition including all associated inpatient, outpatient, and rehabilitative services. This model encourages all providers to keep costs down by avoiding unnecessary services and coordinating the patients end-to-end care. But this more scrupulous approach to managing complex medical conditions has more benefits than just cost containment. It also tends to result in:

  • Better health outcomes and a more streamlined experience for the patient, as reflected in the COE programs 95% satisfaction rate among employees
  • Less time spent in the hospital and far lower rates of hospital readmission, which means reduced employee absenteeism

Building on the success of its COE program, Walmart rolled out a handful of experimental programs in select markets around the country in 2020:
