This year, the sign up period for the HealthCare.gov marketplace plans that go into effect in January 2022 starts Nov. 1, 2021 and runs until Jan.15, 2022. If you’re signing up for an employer-sponsored plan or Medicare, the deadlines will be different, but probably also in the fall. For Medicaid, you can enroll at any time of the year.
DeLaO, the health navigator, says even if you’re already enrolled in a plan that seems fine and it’s tempting to just let it automatically renew, it’s always a good idea to annually check what else is available.
“Are you eligible for additional subsidies to lower the cost of your monthly premium?” he says. “Is there a plan that with those increased subsidies you can now get a silver plan as opposed to a bronze plan, which lowers your deductible your copayments?”
Figuring out the right plan for you doesn’t have to require a huge time commitment, he says. His team aims to get people in and out enrolled in a plan in an hour and a half. And those appointments don’t have to be in person customers can get help by phone and can often do everything they need to do to get signed up virtually.

Affordable Health Insurance In Employer Plans
Most working-age Americans get their health insurance through an employer.
A benefit of employer-sponsored health insurance is that your job helps pay for coverage. Kaiser Family Foundation estimates that employers, on average, pay 83% of health insurance costs in a single plan and the employee picks up 17%. On average, employers pay 73% of health plan costs in a family plan and employees pay 27%.
The downside of employer-sponsored plans is that youre limited to what your job offers. An employer may only give you one option. Businesses are increasingly looking for ways to cut health care costs and one way is to limit health insurance to a single high-deductible health plan.
Even if you have choices, its likely only two or three options. Not ideal, but it still gives you alternatives.
You may find one option has low premiums. That must mean thats the way to go, right? Not necessarily. Low premiums are usually coupled with high deductibles.
High-deductible health plans have a deductible of at least $1,400 for individuals and $2,800 for families.
A deductible is what you have to pay for health care services before the health plan kicks in money. Once you reach your deductible, the health plan begins helping pay for health care services with you picking up your coinsurance amount.

What Did The 5th Circuit Decide
The 5th Circuit issued a 2:1 decision finding the individual mandate unconstitutional and sending the case back to the trial court for additional analysis about whether the rest of the ACA can survive. There are three main issues in the case: whether the parties have standing to invoke the courts jurisdiction whether the ACAs individual mandate, as amended by the TCJA, is constitutional and if the mandate is unconstitutional, whether it can be severed from the rest of the ACA, or on the other hand, whether other provisions of the ACA also must be invalidated. Figure 4 illustrates the legal questions and potential outcomes in the case.
The parties have standing to litigate the case.
The 5th Circuit decided that the case presented a live controversy for it to resolve, despite the unusual alignment of the parties positions. Although the federal government is in almost complete agreement on the merits of the case with the plaintiffs, it also has indicated that it will continue to enforce the ACA unless or until a court issues a final order striking the law down.16 The state intervener-defendants have standing to pursue an appeal because they would be injured by the loss of federal ACA funding, such as funding for the Medicaid expansion and the Medicaid Community First Choice attendant care program, if the trial courts decision is upheld.17
