The Best Way To Travel To France With Your Dog

Is Pet Insurance Worth It? A Veterinarians Advice

Once you have all the necessary paperwork in place, you need to decide the best way to travel to France with your dog.

Taking your car is the easiest option. If you drive to France, you can either take your car on a cross-channel ferry or on a Eurotunnel Le Shuttle train.

There is usually an extra fee to take your dog on a ferry so check with the ferry company. P& O Ferries charges £15 per pet each way on the Dover to Calais route. You can either keep your dog in your car for the crossing or pay a £12 upgrade fee to go to the Pet Lounge.

With DFDS it costs 18 per dog and youll need to leave your dog in your car for the duration of the crossing but you can arrange a time to visit them.

Taking your dog on the Eurotunnel Le Shuttle costs £22. Youll need to check-in your pet at the pet reception in Folkestone and show your dogs AHC or EU pet passport. Your dog will stay in your vehicle with you during the 35-minute train journey.

You cant take your dog on a Eurostar train, unless its a guide or assistance dog.

Flying to France with your dog is much more complicated not all airlines allow dogs and those that do all have different rules.

Most airlines will require your dog to travel in a crate in the cargo area of the plane, with the cost depending on the airline and the size and weight of your pet.

You might be able to take a small dog in the cabin in a carrier that fits under the seat in front of you.

Whats A Benefit Schedule

Nationwide is the only company we review that uses a benefit schedule for its reimbursement method. A benefit schedule includes a list of diagnoses and the maximum amount of money the pet insurance company will pay if a vet treats your pet for that condition or procedure. If the total bill exceeds the benefit schedules listed sum, youre responsible for it.

Benefit schedules can leave you paying a hefty portion of the vet bill and are typically less desirable. Heres an example of a benefit schedule.

When To Get Pet Insurance

Several veterinary doctors provided their take on forgoing health insurance. Doctor Michelle Burch, DVM from Safe Hounds Pet Insurance, does not recommend any animals forgoing pet insurance currently unless you have a few thousand dollars in a saving account for your pet. Although, terminally ill patients and pets that are undergoing hospice care might consider forgoing insurance. Consumers may not see the value in their policies if their pet is already very sick, suggests Dr. Stacy Choczynski Johnson, DVM for Pumpkin Pet Insurance.

How Does Pet Insurance Work

Pet insurance policies usually work on a reimbursement basis. So, you’ll pay your vet directly and then file a claim with your insurer afterward. They’ll then process that claim and reimburse you for the appropriate amount. Depending on your policy and the treatment, it may be the full amount or a percentage of what you were originally charged.

In some cases, these policies have a deductible. This means you have to pay a certain amount out of pocket before your insurer will contribute.

If this sounds like something that could benefit you consider providing some basic information to get a free price quote.

What Determines The Price Of Pet Insurance

Several factors influence the cost of pet insurance premiums, including:

  • Age of the pet: Older pets are typically more expensive to insure as they’re more prone to health issues.
  • Gender of the pet: Male pets are often more expensive to insure.
  • Species: Cats are usually cheaper to insure than dogs.
  • Breed: Breeds that are more prone to health issues will be more costly to insure.
  • Location: Those who live in an area where veterinary care is more expensive can expect to pay more for a pet insurance plan.
  • Pet’s working status: Some pet insurance companies charge more to insure working pets.
  • Coverage options: Plans that cover more health conditions will cost more than a plan with limited protection.
  • Annual maximum: Most pet insurance plans have an annual maximum that limits how much the company will pay for a pet’s care. Choosing a higher annual maximum will increase the cost of the policy.
  • Reimbursement percentage: Most pet insurance policies reimburse policyholders for anywhere from 70% to 90% of covered treatments. Choosing a higher reimbursement percentage increases the premiums.
  • Deductible: Going with a lower deductible will raise a pet insurance policy’s premiums.

Contrary to popular belief, the following factors don’t have any effect on pet insurance premiums:

  • A pet’s medical history

What Factors Impact Your Pet Insurance Premiums

When it comes to pet insurance, your premium is calculated using a combination of factors about you and your pet, in order for each person to pay a fair price for their pet insurance. The following factors can affect your premium amount:

In addition, each pet insurance policy is priced differently depending on the type of cover. This is because each policy covers different medical expenses, with comprehensive being the more expensive cover as it offers a broader range of protection for specified accidental injuries and illnesses .

Conversely, basic cover is the lower cost option as it only covers vet expenses for specified accidental injuries. While policies may also include illness cover, a basic policy may have a lower annual amount you can claim or offer a reduced reimbursement percentage.

Another factor that can affect your premium is your excess. This is the out of pocket amount you pay when you make a claim. If you elect to pay a higher excess, you may pay less each month in insurance premiums and vice versa.

Finally, each insurer prices their products differently, which means no two policies are likely to cost the same.

Discounts For Pet Insurance

Discounts aren’t as common with pet insurance as they are with auto and home insurance. But the best pet insurance companies offer at least a few of the discounts listed below:

  • Multi-pet: Insuring more than one pet gives the owner a discount on their premiums.
  • Paid in full: Paying for annual coverage upfront typically saves the owner money compared to paying for pet insurance monthly.
  • Multi-policy: If the company offers other types of insurance besides pet insurance, the owner might get a discount for purchasing several insurance policies.
  • Service animal: Some companies give discounts to licensed service animals.
  • Employee discount: If the owner is an employee of a certain company, they may be eligible for a discount on their pet insurance cost.
  • Military discount: If the owner is a military member or a veteran, some pet insurance companies will give them a discount on their premiums.

But as with any type of insurance, pet insurance discounts vary by company and sometimes by state. The only way to know which discounts are available is to get a quote from each pet insurance company in consideration.

How To Compare Pet Insurance Policies To Find The Right One For You

How Much Is Dog Health Insurance / Is Pet Insurance Worth The Cost Pet ...

Theres a lot to consider when looking at pet insurance. When searching for insurance, youll find a range of companies offering different policies at different price levels, so make sure you know whats on offer.

Check whats included and excluded in the policy, and find out what excess and contribution you might have to paybearing in mind that most companies may reimburse up to and around 80% of total costs. In some cases, accepting to pay a higher excess may result in lower premiums.

If you consider your pet to be healthy, this might be an option, but be careful not to get caught out for the sake of making only short-term savings. However you should check that if your pet has any pre-existing health conditions as these will generally not be covered.

Be aware that some policies may appear to be good value, but they could have a long no-claims period between signing the contract, and being able to make a claim. Immediate savings in one place could turn out be costlier further down the line, especially if vet expenses come up within the no-claim period.
