Starbucks Health Plans Explained

U.S. Health Care Reform & Starbucks Benefits Options

The healthcare plans that Starbucks offer are as follows:

  • Bronze. Their Bronze healthcare package is considered their lowest level plan. The deductible for this plan is $3,000 for a single person and $6,000 for a family, meaning that the costs that the insured are responsible for can reach upwards of $6,000 for a single person or $12,000 for a family.
  • Bronze Plus. While this plan does not cover the cost of doctors visits at first, the deductible is lower. For a single person the deductible is $2,250 and for a family, its $4,500. Out-of-pocket expenses for a single person are around $3,500 and for a family, theyre about $7,000.
  • Silver. With this plan, you will have a co-pay of $30 for visits to a primary care physician, and $50 for visits to a specialist. The deductible is lower for a single person, its $750 and for a family, its $1,500.
  • Gold. Offering an even lower deductible, the Gold plan is $600 for a single person and $1,200 for a family. The copays are also lower $20 for a primary care visit and $35 for a specialist.
  • Platinum. This is the best coverage option offered by Starbucks, by far. There is no deductible and co-pays are the same amount as those that are associated with the Gold plan. For families, the maximum cost that they will have to pay out of their own pockets is $3,000 and for an individual, the highest out-of-pocket expense is $1,500.

Starbucks Workers Protest Rise In Health Premiums

Updated, 2 p.m. | Saying it spends nearly as much on health insurance for its workers as it does on coffee, Starbucks recently announced that it would increase the amount that eligible employees need to contribute to keep their health care coverage.

On Monday evening, newly unionized Starbucks baristas gathered at the companys regional headquarters in Manhattan to protest the move, which they said would effectively double the cost of their health insurance.

The change would increase the cost of the most basic plan to $20 from $12.50 each paycheck and the annual sign-up cost to $200 from $100, according to Liberte Locke, a barista who has been active in unionization efforts with the Industrial Workers of the World.

If theyre going to charge us this amount, our pay needs to increase, she said. She added that a growing number of employees were ineligible for the health insurance because they worked fewer than 20 hours a week.

A Starbucks spokesman said in a statement that the protest was the work of a small group of people with an outside agenda aimed at promoting itself and its interest.

The coffee company has battled with the union repeatedly, and in December, the National Labor Relations Board judge and otherwise violated federal labor laws at several of its nearly 600 locations in New York City, in an effort to halt the unionization efforts.

Starbucks Ceo Makes Case That Boosting Employee Wages And Benefits Increases Customer Visits

Starbucks CEO Kevin Johnson outlined how boosting wages helps the business, as the coffee chain heads toward a $15 minimum wage for all U.S. partners in the next two to three years.

” always invested in our Starbucks partners and wage and benefits. That’s a good investment to make because if we care for our partners and invest in them, they create that customer connection, and if customer connection scores go up, we know customers visit Starbucks more frequently. So, that is a very important investment,” Johnson told Yahoo Finance on Wednesday.

The executive added that the company has been on the record in recent years in support of an increase in the federal minimum wage.

” been on our own journey of we always pay above minimum wage and in all the markets where we’re part of,” Johnson said.

In a December letter to Congress calling on immediate bipartisan COVID-19 relief legislation, Johnson shared that the company provided catastrophe pay and service pay while stores were closed during the pandemic, without involuntary layoffs. Starbucks also boosted wages in December by at least 10% for all partners, the internal term for employees, Johnson wrote, adding that all employees already earn above the minimum wage.

Johnson told Yahoo Finance that “roughly one-third” of Starbucks retail partners in the U.S. now earn at or above $15 per hour. He expects all partners in the U.S. to be at or above $15 per hour in the next two to three years.

Types Of Health Insurance Plans Available

Starbucks offers five different health insurance plans for their employees. The amount that coverage will cost to you depends on the plan that you enroll with. For example, the lowest level plan also costs the least, while the highest level plan costs the most. It may seem tempting to opt for the lowest level plan, but in reality, you may actually save more money in the end if you purchase the highest and more expensive plan. The reason? Youll have more coverage, which means that there will be less out-of-pocket expenses for your healthcare.

On average, the cost of a high level health insurance plan through Starbucks costs approximately $300 a month for a family of three people. While a lower level policy may cost less monthly, you will have to pay more in out-of-pocket expenses for the healthcare services that you receive for example, the copays may be higher, and certain services may not be covered.

What Does This Mean For Women’s Health

According to Professor Pecoraro, the issue of inaccessible private health care is having a massive impact not only on the overall public health care system but also on the health of women.

“This issue is specifically about private health insurance, but generally speaking, investment by government as well as private health insurance has been inadequate in the arena of womens health for a long time,” he said.

“That is why we are facing a crisis in maternity care with multiple smaller obstetric units closing causing women to have to travel larger distances in the bush to find a hospital where they can give birth, and the closure of multiple private obstetric services because they have become unaffordable.”

The result? Fewer choices for women and an explosion of women needing to go to an underfunded and understaffed public facility, that’s already filled to overcapacity.

This increased reliance on the public sector has many follow-on consequences.

“Public women are being encouraged to leave hospital sooner as early as four hours after a vaginal delivery and 24 hours after an elective c-section,” said Professor Pecoraro.

“This has been shown to increase postnatal depression rates and decrease breastfeeding rates. Also, all the extra work is left to fall on already overburdened general practice.”

As a result, more women are presenting to already overburdened GPs with poor mental health.

Starbucks College Achievement Plan

While the aforementioned benefits are definitely astonishing, the College Achievement Plan may just be the best one. Starbucks invests in its employees and wants to help them get a college education, even if it is completely unrelated to a career at the coffee company.

Starbucks encourages its partners to get a bachelor’s degree by providing them with full-tuition coverage for all four years at Arizona State University. The tuition at ASU is about $15,000 a year, but everyone who enrolls in the program automatically receives a scholarship of 42% of the full tuition. Under the college achievement plan, Starbucks covers the remaining 58% of the full tuition, which means that the students in the program need not worry about their tuition fees as it will be covered fully for them.

According to a Starbucks’ press release, 1800 employees signed up during the first month of the College Achievement Plan back in 2014, and the numbers keep surging to this day. The plan includes over 70 undergraduate degree programs that are delivered online. Even better, Starbucks provides them with a dedicated enrollment coach, academic advisor, and financial aid counselor, so that they can have the best possible support system they need to earn their degrees and improve their lives.

The employees who receive the tuition reimbursement don’t have to keep working for the company after they graduate. They just need to ensure that they continue working there while undergoing their studies.
