Why Covering Kids Is Important

Children who have health coverage receive more consistent preventive care and treatment for any chronic conditions. This avoids expensive emergency room care, saving taxpayer dollars. Getting and keeping kids insured help our state spend scarce dollars wisely.

When children are healthy, they are more likely to grow and learn. Parents can spend their days at work, knowing their children are healthy and thriving. This benefits children, parents and employers.

When children have health coverage, their parents also gain the peace of mind of knowing that minor problems are less likely to become serious conditions. Thats because children with health coverage are more likely to have medical homes through which they receive regular, ongoing treatment for chronic conditions, such as asthma.

NJ FamilyCare is among the most cost-effective government programs. The states investment is a partnership with the federal government that brings federal dollars into the state.

After youve determined which licenses you need, you must now take your New Jersey insurance pre-license education courses.

Most folks choose to take their insurance pre-license course online. These courses are created specifically to give you the skills you need to pass the test. The types of licenses you choose will determine which courses you take.

Each line of authority in New Jersey requires twenty-four hours of pre-license education. This means that if you wish to get a Property and Casualty license, you must take forty-eight hours of pre-licensing, and for Life, Accident, and Health you must also take forty-eight hours.

You will receive a certificate upon completion of the course. Keep this certificate, as you will need it when taking your exam.

New Jersey requires that three of those pre-license education hours must be in ethics coursework.

Medicare Plans For Seniors And Adults Under 65 With Disabilities

New Jersey residents age 65 and older make up 88% of the states Medicare beneficiaries. Individuals under 65 who qualify due to a disability make up the rest.

Original Medicare versus Medicare Advantage

New Jerseyans can choose between Original Medicare or Medicare Advantage to get Part A hospital and Part B medical insurance. Original Medicare is the traditional way most people receive benefits. Nearly 1.1 million N.J. residents have Original Medicare as of 2020. Meanwhile, about 518,295 residents chose private Medicare Advantage plans.

Medicare Advantage plans offer extra benefits beyond Traditional Medicare. Most include prescription drug coverage, and some offer other benefits, such as routine dental, vision, and hearing care.

Medicare Part D Drug Coverage and Medicare Supplement

Traditional Medicare has coverage gaps, such as limited drug coverage and out-of-pocket expenses. Enrollees who want prescription drug benefits usually add a separate Medicare Part D drug plan from a private insurance company. In 2018, more than 915,000 New Jersey residents had a stand-alone Part D plan.

Original Medicare beneficiaries can also add a Medicare Supplement plan to help cover some or all of their out-of-pocket costs, including copayments, co-insurance, and deductibles.

What Is Covered And How Much Will It Cost

Coverage and cost depend on where you live, the type of plan you choose, your estimated household income, and the age and disability status of you and your family. If you qualify for NJ FamilyCare, you will be able to get free or low-cost coverage and may not need to worry about premiums or copays, depending on your income level. All GetCoveredNJ plans cover the essential health benefits, including:

  • Ambulatory care services
  • Preventive and wellness services, including annual physicals and mammograms
  • Chronic disease management
  • Pediatric services

Insurance companies cannot deny coverage because of preexisting conditions. When you apply, you can identify your medical needs and choose a plan that makes financial sense for you and your family. All GetCoveredNJ plans cover basic dental services for children, including cleanings and exams. But adults who want dental coverage must add it to their policy. Deductibles and out-of-pocket costs vary between plans enrolling in a family plan may cut costs.

Finding Your Best Health Insurance Coverage In New Jersey

Your cheapest options for health care coverage will depend on your income level. The state of New Jersey has expanded its Medicaid coverage as part of the Affordable Care Act , which means people whose income is under 138% of the federal poverty level may qualify for subsidized coverage at reduced or no cost.

If you don’t qualify for Medicaid, then your best options for cheap health insurance coverage will be a Bronze or Silver plan through the New Jersey health insurance marketplace. These plans have lower rates, and those with low or moderate incomes can qualify for tax subsidies to reduce monthly costs.

When it comes to the cost of health care, you should take both premiums and out-of-pocket costs into account. Getting the best health plan for your situation is about finding the right balance between the two.

Plans with lower premiums will generally have higher deductibles, copays and coinsurance, which means you will be responsible for a larger portion of costs before the plan’s benefits kick in.

For those people with higher expected medical costs, the best health insurance plan would usually have a lower deductible and a higher monthly premium. Those who are healthier and rarely use medical care should look for the opposite type of plan: low monthly costs with a higher deductible.

Silver plans: Best if you have standard medical expenses

Healthier and younger consumers should consider cheap Bronze plans

What Happens To Medicaid Members Next Year

During the pandemic, 468,000 people became newly enrolled in Medicaid. They remain enrolled no one could be kicked off, even if their income rose, under federal law.

But once the national public health emergency ends a decision President Joe Biden is expected to make sometime in 2022 each state will be required to reevaluate whether the people receiving Medicaid benefits are still eligible, based on their incomes.

New Jersey plans to take a full year to do that, and is contacting members now to make sure their address information is correct.

When that happens, Its possible that many Medicaid recipients will become eligible for Obamacare policies purchased through Get Covered New Jersey. State officials say they’ll aim for a “warm handoff” to make sure that health coverage continues.

“Ensuring that this population is covered is a priority for the administration,” said a spokeswoman for the insurance department. Having a state-based marketplace makes it easier to coordinate with Medicaid as customers make the transition, she said. If necessary, the exchange may open for a special enrollment period to make sure the switch goes smoothly.
