Make no mistake outside disruptors like Apple, Google and Amazon will have a serious impact on benefit advisors in the near future. Currently, most advisors revenue models depend on only a few major health insurance carriers for the majority of their commissions. But what happens if these technology giants quickly put some of these carriers out of business? A look at recent business history shows us that this scenario is more likely than you might think.
In 2018, Amazon, Berkshire Hathaway and JPMorgan Chase formed Haven Healthcare, a Boston-based nonprofit with the short-term goal to provide health care/health insurance to the combined 1.2 million employees of the joint-ventures parent companies. But the larger, longer-term goal was to eventually offer other small and mid-sized independent companies health insurance, as well, essentially creating alternatives to traditional health insurance carriers.

Uncovering and explaining how our digital world is changing and changing us.
In the midst of the Covid-19 pandemic, Amazon appears to be considering a new business: helping Amazon sellers with their own health insurance needs. Amazon sellers account for nearly 60 percent of Amazons retail sales, with around 900,000 active Amazon seller accounts in the US alone. That merchant base gives Amazon a huge potential target for such an offering.
Earlier this week, Amazon sent out a survey to its sellers, inquiring about the types of health insurance coverage these merchants offer their own employees. The survey, which Recode viewed, asked whether the sellers are satisfied with the coverage or would consider alternative options.
What can be improved on your current health coverage? one question asked. Are you interested in alternative health insurance options? asked another.
The survey also included questions about how much a seller pays in insurance premiums and what percentage of premiums fall on employees to cover. Amazon also asked about the complexity of choosing good and affordable health insurance plans for their employees and how satisfied they are with their coverage.
In the language of the survey, Amazon did not firmly commit to creating a health care or health insurance offering for its sellers and their respective employee bases. But the survey did end by saying e will keep you informed as we explore how Amazon may be able to support your needs better.

Think About The Cost Is Your Employer Insurance Affordable That Is Is Your Cost For You Only Coverage Less Than Or Equal To 95% Of Your Income
If your employer offers qualified health insurance coverage that is affordable, you are not eligible for a government subsidy. You may still elect to purchase insurance anywhere, however you will not be eligible for a government subsidy. The choice is yours. Before you choose a plan:
- Think about the cost. Is your employer insurance “affordable?” That is, is your cost for “you only” coverage less than or equal to 9.5% of your income?
- If it is, and the insurance meets coverage standards as required by law, you can still buy insurance through a marketplace, but you will not qualify for financial help. If you can’t afford the health insurance offered to you through your employer or in a marketplace, you may qualify for Medicaid, or your children may qualify for the Children’s Health Insurance Program. Each state has its own eligibility requirements for these programs.
What Type Of Insurance Is Available On An Exchange
The State and Federal exchanges feature the four metallic plan levels: Bronze, Silver, Gold, and Platinum. Each plan type provides different levels of insurance, at different costs, to fit different needs. All the plans offered in a marketplace must meet certain rules relating to affordability, required benefits, and market standards. You can also choose from a variety of insurance companies. Shopping on a health insurance marketplace makes it easier to compare all of your options. No matter which plan you choose, the new law requires that a core package of items and services is covered. That way you can rest assured that you will have insurance for the basics, also known as the Minimum Essential Benefits.

Amazon Will Offer $4000 Per Year To Us Employees Who Need To Travel To Different States For Medical Procedures Including Abortion And Transgender Care
Amazon will cover up to $4,000 per year in medical care travel costs for US employees.
The new coverage is for non-life threatening treatments, including abortion and transgender care.
Amazon follows similar moves by large employers like Citigroup, Apple, Levi’s and Yelp.
Amazon will cover up to $4,000 per year in travel costs for US employees seeking non-life threatening medical treatments, including elective abortion.
The company notified workers in an internal message that was first reported by Reuters, and a spokesperson confirmed Reuters’ reporting to Insider. An employee source also shared screenshots of the announcement with Insider.
Several large employers have announced similar policies in the wake of increasingly restrictive laws passed by Republican-controlled states like Texas, Oklahoma, and Alabama.
“In response to changes in reproductive health-care laws in certain states in the U.S., beginning in 2022 we provide travel benefits to facilitate access to adequate resources,”Citigroup told investors in a filing after Texas Governor Greg Abbot signed a law banning abortion after a fetal heartbeat is detected.
Other companies include Apple, Bumble, Levi’s, and HP.
Amazon’s plan is intended to cover travel and lodging for treatments that are not available near an employee’s home. The plan expands on an existing policy and covers not just abortion, but transgender care, cardiology treatments, cellular gene therapies, and substance-abuse disorder services as well.

Make choosing a cost-effective health plan easy
Among our clients, weve found that 50 to 60 percent of consumers waste over $1,300 a year overbuying health insurance. If other players in the market dont correct these inefficiencies, Amazon will, says MyHealthMath Founder and CEO Bob Watterson. Slicing inefficiencies is what theyve done again and again in other markets. It wont be any different here.
Employees choose the wrong health plan because its too hard to do the math and figure out the most cost-effective option. Individuals have very little transparency about how much their healthcare will cost them, so they often choose a low deductible plan with higher premiumsa more expensive option that feels safer. This results in employers and employees wasting millions annually overpaying on premiums. Robust decision support tools can slash that waste by doing the math for employees and empowering them to choose a plan that will save them money.
Importantly, these tools need to be personalized to be effective. Tools that calculate the best plan based on limited information or dont factor in employer-specific plan information risk inaccuracies and continued inertia. Without personalization, employees are also less likely to trust these recommendations, and therefore less likely to change behavior.

Amazon Is Shaking Up Healthcare
In the past year, there have been talks about Amazon going into the healthcare market. Jeff Bezos of Amazon has acquired the online pharmacy PillPack, as well as teamed up with JPMorgan Chase and Berkshire Hathaway. One of the goals in this is to create their own pharmacy where you can order your pills with your next Amazon Prime package. Amazon is also looking to incorporate the Alexa device to help with medical needs, such as reminding you what your blood sugar levels are, or re-ordering your prescription medication. It is possible that, with Amazon, you would not even need to leave your home to go to the doctor, test for medical issues or get medications.
The three companies’ new joint venture, Haven, looks to disrupt the cost and difficulty that comes with healthcare, by cutting out the middlemen, the pharmacy-benefit manager, thus cutting down the pharmacy’s take and standardizing prices for medicine. Although, prior authorization for medication could be done better. It is possible that Haven may even fund their own health insurance, if they get the right permits. It is still up in the air what Haven is going to do in the future, but there are many speculations.

Why Is It Necessary To Experience A Qualifying Life Event To Buy Insurance Outside Of Open Enrollment
The Affordable Care Act prohibits health insurance companies from declining any applicant based on his or her personal medical history. If people were allowed to enroll at any time of the year they might wait until they fall ill before enrolling. If only sick people were to enroll in coverage, the cost would skyrocket. To prevent this situation, the open enrollment period was created and everyone is encouraged to enroll at that time.

Its No Secret That The Private Health Insurance Market Is Plagued By Massive Inefficiencies Every Year Most Consumers Are Confused And Overwhelmed By Health Insurance Purchasing And Can Waste Thousands Of Dollars Choosing The Wrong Plan At The Same Time Premiums And Deductibles Are Rapidly Rising At A Rate That Well Outpaces Annual Wage Growth
Opaque pricing models have forced employers and consumers to accept these inefficiencies. Now, Amazon Care is poised to upend this unsatisfactory status quopushing health benefits advisors and carriers to consider ways to bolster their competitive advantage.
Currently, Amazon Care provides Washington state-based Amazon employees access to medical care via telehealth and in-person home visits. In summer 2021, Amazon Care will roll out to all Amazon employees across the country as well as other Washington-based companies. This first expansion is very likely just the beginning of Amazons move into the healthcare space. And since Amazon Care is contracting directly with employers, theyre setting themselves up as a viable alternative to large health insurance providers, and potentially circumventing their brokers entirely.
Whatever the tech giants next move, theres no question that it will disrupt the private health insurance market.
Our health system is incredibly fragmented, which results in massive cost inefficiencies and individuals left largely on their own, says MyHealthMath President and Chief Mission Officer Dr. Elizabeth Cote, MD, MPA. Through conglomeration, Amazon is uniquely capable to solve this chaos and gain efficiencies, giving individuals what they cravea coordinated, predictable, understandable, and comfortable healthcare experience.
