What If My Provider Is Out Of Network

It is best to choose an in-network provider to benefit from lower treatment costs.

Out-of-network providers do not have contracts with UPMC in which they have agreed to offer services at predetermined rates. If you choose a treatment center that is out of network, you may be required to pay a large portion of the treatment cost or the entire cost.

Whenever possible, it is best to choose an in-network provider to benefit from lower treatment costs. If you are interested in receiving treatment from an out-of-network provider, ask the provider about other available payment options and payment plans like sliding scale fees that can make treatment more affordable for you or your loved one.

Updates From The Past

Culture of Service Excellence

UPMC will be considering Highmark facilities non-network at the end of 2014, which could drastically increase the cost for many users. Legislation has now been introduced that will require UPMC to accept Highmark members as in the network. The bill is designed to protect consumers in the Western portion of the state.

The feud may be nearing an end. The antitrust lawsuits between UPMC and Highmark are over, according to their attorneys. Although the network-provider issue is still unresolved, it is a step in the right direction.

UPMC and Highmark have decided to dismiss their lawsuits against each other. A judge had also ruled last month for the dismissal. The original litigation between the two huge companies started in 2009. Both carriers offer healthcare coverage in Western Pa.

The National Football League has awarded a grant to UPMC for concussion research. Brain imaging research is being used to help in the treatment and discovery of concussions. Football players, of course, are very prone to head injuries, despite recent rule changes.

UPMC might be terminating its Medicare Advantage plans with Highmark, and the Blue Cross company is not happy. Governor Tom Wolf would like the action reversed, and has threatened to take action to protect consumers. However, the main issue seems to be if the terms of an existing contract were broken when Highmark reduced its network payments for cancer-care.

Less Coverage Than Regular Plans

Physical Therapists

Many short-term plans may not cover:

  • Routine office visits.
  • Preventive care .
  • Prenatal and maternity care.
  • Behavioral health and substance use.

Not only are fewer types of care covered, there may also be no limit on the out-of-pocket expenses you pay for care. ACA-compliant plans such as those offered by UPMC Health Plan must set out-of-pocket limits, which means the amount youll pay for treatment is limited. With a short-term plan, there is no required out-of-pocket limit, which means your bills for care could be extremely high, causing long-term debt.

Because short-term insurance plans are not ACA-compliant, they can also deny coverage or charge much higher premiums if you have a pre-existing condition. If youre healthy when you buy a short-term plan and develop a medical condition, you could lose your coverage once your plan ends.

Which Highmark Members Have Full In

Highmark members with broad-network commercial or Medicare Advantage plans have full, in-network access to UPMC hospitals, doctors, and services. Highmark members with narrow-network plans have some limited in-network access to UPMC. If you have additional questions, we encourage you to review your plan carefully with Highmark.

Location Of Your Business And Employees

For a business located in Western Pennsylvania, there is a good chance that some of your employees may live in a neighboring state like Ohio or West Virginia. And since the onset of COVID, many businesses have employees working remotely from a different state than the employer.

Not all group health insurance products work well for employees in other states.

If you have employees that live out of state, you may need a network that meets their needs. Your Employee Benefits Broker should be able to direct you to a company that will meet the needs of all of your employees, no matter where they live.

You also need to have a good idea of which medical facilities your employees are likely to use. Not all hospital providers are in an insurance companys network. To keep your employees satisfied with their coverage, you will need to make sure they can use the facilities they prefer.
